D J   H Y D E   M A T H E N Y  |  Paintings of the Flint Hills

As a hospice worker and a Buddhist, I find the bardos, or the times “in-between,” the most interesting times to contemplate. It is in these transitional times, between day and night—life and death—that the veil between sacred and profane becomes most thin.

With the use of a soothing, rich color palette, varying textures and a sense of luminosity, my paintings attempt to inspire the experience of stillness and mystery at dusk or dawn in the natural landscape. While I paint in the studio, I concentrate on images of the Flint Hills of Kansas, abundant with mystical spaces or “thin places"—as they were known by the Celtic Christians—where the heart is transformed, and earthly pain is transmuted into heavenly joy.
